Welcome to the ADOS Research Institute

about Us

A Statement of Commitment to ADOS Research:

The American Descendants of Slavery Research Institute (ADOS RI) was born from a movement dedicated to better understanding, and subsequently improving, the material condition of the American Descendants of Slavery (ADOS) and their lived experiences. Although research pertinent and applicable to Black people exists, it became abundantly clear to us that the way forward for Black people in the United States included the evaluation and application of data-driven solutions and remedies to address the persistent challenges of ADOS people. Thus, the ADOS RI was formed with the specific purpose of centering ADOS as the primary population of study.

The researchers and collaborators who contribute to the mission of the ADOS RI are committed to continued research in the current political and social climates that are increasingly hostile to academic rigor, knowledge, expertise, and justice. We are committed to collating perspectives from different disciplines in the life, behavioral, physical, and social sciences. We are committed to producing quality insights, reports, data and analyses that aid in better understanding the various impacts of life for the ADOS people group.

Our Initiatives

1

Collaborate with White House OMB

The recent decision1 by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and the Federal Interagency Working Group on Race and Ethnicity Standards (Working Group) was to maintain the Black/African American category. The Working Group has proposed to host Town Halls in continued efforts to research the necessity for an ADOS-specific designation in their revision of Statistical Policy Directive No. 15: Standards for Maintaining, Collecting, and Presenting Federal Data on Race and Ethnicity (SPD 15). The ADOS RI is requesting to collaborate with the Working Group as stakeholders to assist in providing data-supported suggestions, need for disaggregation on federal forms, and recommendations towards the selection of an appropriate term for the disaggregated group.

2

Data Disaggregation Research

Data disaggregation is and will continue to be a critical methodological aspect of studying ADOS people. It is necessary to demonstrate how this step in the research process will illuminate the truest standing of this particular population. Synthesizing information from existing studies, developing new research activities, and submitting manuscripts for publication will strengthen this position.

Our Goals

The central goal is to establish a 501c3 research institute focused on ADOS issues through:

  • Centering ADOS people in interdisciplinary research and in publications.
  • Providing a bedrock of research in supporting efforts towards characterizing the
disenfranchisement of ADOS people through current day.
  • Creating a collaborative network of scholars and institutions in the ongoing study of ADOS people.
  • Generating independent research ideas that support the mission and initiatives of the ADOS Research Institute.
